Solar Stocks Summary
Note: At this time there is a general market comment advising caution at this time. It is not a time to be initiating new positions.
The overall market is currently in a very overbought condition, and a number of key technical indicators are also very overbought.
Not only is the market very overbought short-term, but it is extremely overbought intermediate-term above its long-term 200-day moving average, which I have mentioned in the last couple of updates. It is important to keep in mind that the more serious corrections have usually begun over the years from similar overbought levels above the 200 day average.
Individual Stock Comments

Canadian Solar (CSIQ) has shown an improvement in relative strength – taking a first step toward an upgrade in rating.
J A Solar Holdings (JASO) has closed up above $8.25 indicating that it has regained its upside strength
SolarFun (SOLF) has completed a merger and has changed its name to: Hanwha Solarone Co. Ltd and its symbol to HSOL. However, it is still the weakest of our solar seven stocks and would break a critical longer term support level with a daily close below $8.00.
Sunpower (SPWRA) has also shown improvement in relative strength – taking another step toward an upgrade in rating.

Solar Stocks Start to show Signs of Life; FSLR, JASO, SOL, SOLF, TSL and YGE show Positive Momentum

Point Roberts, South Salem, New York- July 19, 2010 - Investorideas.com and its green investor portal, www.renewableenergystocks.com report on new solar stocks commentary from solar contributor, J. Peter Lynch,“ Solar stocks show signs of life.”

Solar Stocks Commentary with J Peter Lynch
http://www.renewableenergystocks.com/PL/

Exclusively for InvestorIdeas.com and Renewableenergystocks.com
Since the market peaked in late April the market has been struggling to keep its head above water. There is a lot of fear out there and when markets are acting like they currently are – i.e. multiple series of lower tops and lower bottoms – it is NOT a good sign. It is still possible that this is the long awaited correction and not the beginning of a much deeper slide. It IS, without question, a time for extreme caution and not a time to initiate new positions, unless you are a trader and move in and out of stocks on a daily or weekly basis.
However amid this confusing and downward trending market the solar sector has been showing some signs of life. Since the second week in July a number of solar stocks have turned the corner and started to show positive momentum. These stocks are: FSLR, JASO, SOL, SOLF, TSL and YGE. If the market is indeed in a correction and not the start of something worse – these stocks appear to have the best chance of becoming the sector leader when the market uptrend begins again. In addition, these stocks are also the stocks in the sector that have the highest relative strength toward their peers in the solar sector – another good sign.

Below is a table which shows the sectors performance since June 1 2010 and from the beginning of the year. You can see that some of these stocks are also the best performing stocks and some have actually shown a positive return year to date.

Green Investor News - Energy Conversion Devices (Nasdaq: ENER) Announces Plan To Build Manufacturing Facility in France

Energy Conversion Devices (Nasdaq: ENER) Announces Plan To Build Manufacturing Facility in France

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD) (Nasdaq: ENER), the leading global manufacturer of thin-film flexible solar laminate products for the building integrated and commercial rooftop markets, today announced plans to establish a 30MW solar laminate manufacturing facility in France. The company has started its initial site selection process and is evaluating various sites, particularly in the Alsace region.

Mark Morelli, ECD's president and chief executive officer, said, "France is one of the world's fastest growing and most progressive solar markets. It has expressed its long-term support of alternative energy in the Grenelle de l'environnement objectives, and the recent change to its feed-in-tariff structure establishes a sustainable foundation to meet those objectives. We are pleased that France is continuing to support the development of high added-value technology and innovative solutions like UNI-SOLAR® laminates, which protect the aesthetics of France's cultural heritage by integrating into the building architecture. We are also pleased that France is clearly showing leadership to avoid the speculative bubble we have seen in solar energy in other markets in the past."
"We relocated our European headquarters to Paris last year, and believe it is now an excellent time to locate manufacturing in this market close to our channel partners and customers. With the new tariff structure resolved, and the high concentration of low-load bearing buildings that are ideally suited for our lightweight and low impact UNI-SOLAR solutions, we see growing demand for our solar products in France. We look forward to working with French officials to identify the right support to realize this project, and to create local jobs in both research and development and manufacturing," added Mr. Morelli.
Expected terms of the project, including anticipated launch date, were not disclosed and are subject to completion.

U.S. Solar Market to Double by 2011

U.S. Solar Market to Double by 2011; New Projects Will Support at Least 50,000 New Jobs and Over $6.1B in Annual Investment

Growth in Nevada, New Jersey and Arizona Will Diversify the U.S. Solar Market, Utility-Scale Projects Represent Largest Market Opportunity

CAMBRIDGE, MA--- December 8, 2009 - The United States is on pace to dominate the global solar PV market, according to a recent report by GTM Research: The United States PV Market Through 2013: Project Economics, Policy, Demand and Strategy. Buoyed by falling solar prices and a domestic economy on the rebound, the U.S. will challenge Germany as the industry's largest solar market over the next four years.

GTM Research estimates that demand for PV installations will grow by roughly 50 percent annually to between 1.5 GW and 2 GW in 2012. This growth could support at least 50,000 new jobs and over $6.1 billion in annual investment, and it will allow 1.5 million homes to enjoy clean, reliable solar energy. The graphic provides demand projections for the U.S. through 2012.
2009 Will Be a Record Year for the U.S. PV Market

Despite the recession, the report argues that 2009 is a record year for the U.S. PV Market. Installed projects will reach 440 MW in 2009, up from 320 MW in 2008. By 2011, demand will more than double to reach 1,212 MW.

Demand is increasingly supported by the residential and utility-scale sectors, which have taken advantage of new incentives in the Recovery Act of 2008. Funding from the 2009 Stimulus Package (ARRA) will also support an expanded market for public sector projects.
Second-Tier State Markets Gain Increasing Importance
California remains the country's dominant state market, but second-tier states will soon emerge to diversify the U.S. market. By 2012, combined base-case demand from Arizona, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Nevada and Massachusetts will reach 376 MW. With this new opportunity, it is more important than ever to understand the complex mix of incentives and regulations that govern growth in these new state markets.

"California will remain the largest PV market in the country, but downstream success is contingent on competing in the five to seven second-tier demand states that will emerge by 2012, each supporting over 40 MW of annual demand," said Shayle Kann, Energy Analyst at GTM Research and co-author of the report.

Utility-Scale Projects Drive Growth
Utility-scale installations will be the fastest growing market segment, stealing market share from the commercial sector and reaching 466 MW in the 2012 base-case scenario. This is partly a result of renewable portfolio standard (RPS) requirements and a wave of new solar-specific RFPs in states with solar carve-outs. It is also a result of heightened interest in utility ownership of PV, for which there are numerous economic and operational benefits for utilities.
"Innovations in utility-scale PV business models will create new market opportunities for traditional players in the energy and infrastructure space, as well as for European project developers with experience building large PV projects. This emergent market will also benefit the handful of well-funded, experienced U.S. PV project developers," said Daniel Englander, GTM Research's Senior Energy Analyst and the report's co-author.

Detailed information and intelligence on project financing, profiles of all leading project developers, detailed analysis of the 16 primary state markets, demand projections by state and market segment, and analysis of the impacts of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) on PV demand in the U.S. can be found in the report.

Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) to Develop Maryland’s Largest Solar Photovoltaic Power System

Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) to Develop Maryland’s Largest Solar Photovoltaic Power System

BALTIMORE= Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) announced that it has been selected by the state of Maryland to develop an approximately 15.9 megawatt DC (13.5 MW/AC) solar photovoltaic power installation under the state’s Generating Clean Horizons initiative. This installation will represent the bulk of a 17.1 megawatt DC (14.5 MW/AC), approximately $60 million solar facility that will be constructed, owned, operated and maintained by Constellation Energy on land leased from Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md. The system is expected to be completed by December 2012 and would be the largest solar photovoltaic installation in Maryland. Only two photovoltaic systems currently in operation in the U.S. are larger.

“Constellation Energy is pleased to be partnering with the state of Maryland on the Generating Clean Horizons initiative to develop new sources of clean power and stimulate the economy through the growth of the clean energy sector,” said Mayo A. Shattuck III, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Constellation Energy. “This large-scale solar facility will make a significant contribution to our shared goal of a cleaner energy future.”

Renewable electricity produced by the system will be purchased by the state of Maryland under a 20-year solar power purchase agreement. The system is expected to produce more than 21,000,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

The system will utilize innovative thin-film photovoltaic solar panels situated on approximately 100 acres of university land. Under the agreement, Mount St. Mary’s University will also purchase 1.2 megawatts of electricity from the system.

“This unique partnership with Constellation Energy strengthens Mount St. Mary’s University’s commitment to the promotion and creation of clean energy,” said Thomas H. Powell, president, Mount St. Mary’s University. “It continues the ‘greening’ of the Mount. Our students will be on the forefront of responsible land use and creation of renewable energy resources. Frederick County will benefit not only from our generation of clean energy but also from the reduction of dependence on more traditional use of coal, natural gas and fossil fuels.”

The Maryland Energy Administration, in partnership with the University System of Maryland and the Department of General Services approved the award of four renewable energy projects under the Generating Clean Horizons program launched in February 2009 to spur the development of large-scale, commercial renewable energy projects like this one. Under the initiative, the state issued requests for proposals for long-term power purchase agreements from renewable power sources delivering clean power to the grid by 2014.

Constellation Energy’s solar facility in Emmitsburg represents several recent commitments by the company to energy efficiency and clean energy projects in Maryland. Last week the company announced that it signed an agreement to develop a $140 million, 70-megawatt wind energy project in Garrett County, Md. The company also recently completed construction of a $1 billion air quality scrubber at its Brandon Shores power plant. Baltimore Gas and Electric, Constellation Energy’s regulated utility in Central Maryland, announced that it has received federal matching dollars to develop one of the most ambitious Smart Grid systems in the United States. Constellation Energy also continues to be recognized as a leader pursuing the development of greenhouse-gas-emissions-free new nuclear plants in the U.S.

Constellation Energy has developed approximately 10 megawatts of solar photovoltaic systems for customers in Maryland and throughout the U.S. In 2008, the company developed a 300-kilowatt solar system for the Maryland Environmental Service, the first of its kind for a Maryland state agency.

About Constellation Energy

Constellation Energy (www.constellation.com) is a leading supplier of energy products and services to wholesale and retail electric and natural gas customers. It owns a diversified fleet of generating units located in the United States and Canada, totaling approximately 7,100 megawatts of generating capacity, and is among the leaders pursuing the development of new nuclear plants in the United States. The company delivers electricity and natural gas through the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE), its regulated utility in Central Maryland. A FORTUNE 500 company headquartered in Baltimore, Constellation Energy had revenues of $19.8 billion in 2008.

First Solar to Build 48 Megawatt Photovoltaic Power Plant for Sempra Generation in Nevada

First Solar to Build 48 Megawatt Photovoltaic Power Plant for Sempra Generation in Nevada

The Solar Project Would Be the Largest PV Installation in North America

TEMPE, Ariz.--April 15 2009 --First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR ) today announced it has executed an agreement to build a 48 megawatt (MW) AC ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) power plant for Sempra Generation. This project would expand the 10MW AC power plant First Solar completed for Sempra Generation in 2008, which is located near Boulder City, Nev.

First Solar will design, engineer and construct the PV power plant. The Company expects to begin construction in 2009. Once construction is completed in 2010, the combined 58MW AC project is expected to be the largest PV power plant in North America.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to expand this 10MW project to 58MW—more than five times its original size, advancing our mission of providing clean, affordable solar electricity,” said John Carrington, First Solar executive vice president of marketing and business development. “Sempra Generation’s decision to use First Solar in expanding the El Dorado solar plant demonstrates our ability to provide a cost-effective energy solution for utility scale projects.”

As is the case with the original 10MW AC solar plant, the 48MW AC project will be constructed adjacent to Sempra Generation’s existing 480MW El Dorado Energy power plant, located about 40 miles southeast of Las Vegas. Sempra Generation will own and operate the PV power plant. The agreement is conditioned upon Sempra Generation executing a power purchase agreement with a utility customer for the electricity generated by the PV power plant and applicable state and local regulatory approvals.

Solar Stocks Explode
As I have said many times in the past, solar stocks are FAR MORE volatile than the average stock and that we can expect this above average volatility to continue because of the early stage of the industry and the general nature of the market we are in today. However, the past 4 trading days have been nothing less than spectacular for solar stocks. The 21 companies we track are up an AVERAGE of 42%, which to the best of my knowledge is an unprecedented move by any market sector in my experience. The average gain is close to 5 FOLD greater than the movement of the Dow, the S&P and the NASDAQ.

First Solar Produces 1 Gigawatt of Clean Solar Electricity

First Solar Produces 1 Gigawatt of Clean Solar Electricity

TEMPE, Ariz.--March 20 2009 --First Solar, Inc., (Nasdaq:FSLR) today announced that it has produced 1 gigawatt (GW) of its advanced solar modules since beginning commercial production in early 2002.

It took the Company more than six years to produce its first 500 megawatts (MW) and eight months to produce its second, creating today’s 1GW total. By the end of this year, the Company has announced it will have the capacity to produce more than 1GW per year— the equivalent of an average-sized nuclear power plant.

“This volume allows us to rapidly reduce manufacturing costs, thereby furthering our mission of making solar power an affordable alternative to conventional energy sources,” said Bruce Sohn, First Solar president. “We appreciate the many contributions our associates have made in reaching this 1GW milestone and are grateful for all their hard work.”

First Solar began production in Perrysburg, Ohio, with a single manufacturing line and approximately 150 associates in 2002. By the end of 2009, the Company’s solar modules will come from 23 manufacturing lines on three continents and employing more than 4,000 associates. The Company currently has manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Germany and Malaysia and offices located throughout North America and Europe.
