SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 29 /- SunPower Corporation (Nasdaq: SPWRA ) today announced record financial results for its 2008 fourth quarter and fiscal year, which ended Dec. 28, 2008. Revenue for the 2008 fourth quarter was $401 million and compares to $378 million in the third-quarter of 2008 and $224 million in the fourth-quarter of last year. The Components and Systems segments accounted for 56% and 44% of fourth-quarter revenue, respectively.
"Our fourth-quarter performance reflects the continued strength of our vertically integrated business model, broad channel reach and geographic diversification," said Tom Werner, SunPower's CEO. "Our flexible model enables us to rapidly deploy our solutions across multiple geographies, especially in our worldwide dealer network where we continue to see strong demand both in the United States and Europe. Our Systems business also executed well in the fourth quarter as we commissioned dozens of large scale solar projects globally."
On a GAAP basis for the 2008 fourth quarter, SunPower reported gross margin of 27.9%, total operating income of $55 million and net income per diluted share of $0.35.
On a non-GAAP basis, adjusted to exclude non-cash charges for amortization of intangible assets of $4.2 million and stock-based compensation of $18.2 million, SunPower reported total gross margin of 29.9%, operating income of $77.5 million and net income per diluted share of $0.70. This compares with prior-quarter non-GAAP gross margin of 29.2%, total operating income of $73 million and $0.58 net income per diluted share. For the 2008 fourth quarter, Components segment gross margin was 35.6% and Systems segment gross margin was 22.7%. The company's GAAP and Non-GAAP fourth-quarter results include a $6.3 million, or $0.07 net income per diluted share, foreign currency gain related to its Korean joint venture.
"Long-term solar market fundamentals remain in place and we are encouraged by the commitment to renewable energy by President Obama and Congressional leadership," continued Werner. "Given these factors, we are well positioned to take advantage of growing global demand for solar this year and in the future, despite uncertainty in today's economic and credit environment."
2009 Guidance
The company expects the following fiscal year 2009 non-GAAP results: total revenue of $1.6 billion to $2.0 billion, net income per diluted share of $2.20 to $2.80(1) and production capacity of more than 450 megawatts.
"The long-term solar industry fundamentals remain very positive and the company's 2009 sales pipeline is made up of identifiable customers and projects," said Dennis Arriola, SunPower's chief financial officer. "Given the continuing weak credit environment, our ability to meet the high-end of the revenue and earnings-per-share ranges will be dependent on improved access to the project financing markets. We expect our first-half of 2009 performance to be materially affected by seasonal factors and the continuing impact of the credit crisis."
This press release contains both GAAP and non-GAAP financial information. Non-GAAP figures are reconciled to the closest GAAP equivalent figures on the final page of this press release.
Please note that the company has posted supplemental information related to its fourth-quarter 2008 performance on the Events and Presentations section of the Investor Relations page located on the SunPower website at http://www.sunpowercorp.com.

National Grid and Beacon Power (Nasdaq: BCON ),Sign Agreement to Evaluate Flywheel Technology for Grid Applications
National Grid and Beacon Power Sign Agreement to Evaluate Flywheel Technology for Grid Applications
Evaluation to focus on benefits of fast-response regulation and heightened demand for regulation due to wind power
TYNGSBORO, Mass.--Jan 26 2009 --Beacon Power Corporation (Nasdaq: BCON ), a company that designs and develops advanced products and services to support more stable, reliable and efficient electricity grid operation, announced that it has executed an information sharing and performance evaluation agreement with the energy utility company National Grid.
Under the two-year agreement, the companies will share technical, performance and economic data associated with Beacon’s flywheel energy storage systems and their potential operational value to National Grid’s electricity transmission networks. Objectives of the agreement include National Grid’s evaluation of Beacon’s flywheel energy storage systems not only for fast-response frequency regulation, but also for wind-related ramp mitigation – another potential large-scale grid stability application.
“National Grid is committed to assessing new energy technologies and their capacity to help create a more efficient, environmentally responsible and cost-effective modern grid,” said Stan Blazewicz, Vice President, Global Head of Technology for National Grid. “The positive attributes of flywheel energy storage – especially its high efficiency, zero carbon emissions, and extremely fast response – make it a technology of significant interest and one we are keen to investigate.”
“National Grid is one of the largest investor-owned utility companies in the world, with an extensive footprint in the United Kingdom as well as the northeastern U.S.,” said Bill Capp, Beacon Power president and CEO. “Prior to this agreement, we collaborated closely with National Grid in 2006 and 2007 on our demonstration system in Amsterdam, New York, as well as more recently on three interconnection projects in Massachusetts and New York. We believe that additional benefits can come from the broader sharing of information provided by this new agreement.”
Beacon Power and National Grid will focus on the sharing of technical information and performance results for Beacon’s Smart Energy Matrix, the energy storage-based regulation resource that Beacon is now operating under ISO New England’s Alternative Technologies Program. The two companies will also be sharing technical information and analysis of the potential economic and performance benefits of fast-response flywheel regulation and wind-related ramp mitigation, in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom.
Ramp mitigation refers to the ability of regulation and reserve generation units to quickly compensate for a rapid system-wide change in aggregate power output caused by sudden changes in power production. As an intermittent resource, wind power generation often experiences rapid fluctuations in power output. As the amount of wind generation on the grid increases, many grid operators foresee the need to increase total regional ramping capacity to maintain proper energy balance.
Under terms of the agreement, Beacon will work with National Grid to forecast future increases in the demand for regulation capacity resulting from greater deployment of wind power. National Grid will also work with Beacon Power to define an optimal control algorithm for Beacon’s fast-response energy storage technology that would maximize regulation benefits on the grid.

About OriginOil, Inc.
OriginOil, Inc. is developing a breakthrough technology that will transform algae, the most promising source of renewable oil, into a true competitor to petroleum. Much of the world's oil and gas is made up of ancient algae deposits. Today, our technology will produce "new oil" from algae, through a cost-effective, high-speed manufacturing process. This endless supply of new oil can be used for many products, such as diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, plastics and solvents, without the global warming effects of petroleum. Other oil-producing feedstock, such as corn and sugarcane, often destroy vital farmlands and rainforests, disrupt global food supplies and create new environmental problems. Our unique technology, based on algae, is targeted at fundamentally changing our source of oil without disrupting the environment or food supplies.
Carbon Sciences Readies for Growth as Obama Inauguration Marks Dramatic Shift in U.S. Policy and Federal Support for Renewable Energy
Company Expects Green-Friendly Administration to Help Accelerate Development and Commercialization of Its Breakthrough CO2 to Fuel Technology
SANTA BARBARA, CA-- Jan 22, 2009 -- Carbon Sciences, Inc. (OTC BB:CABN.OB), the developer of a breakthrough technology to transform carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into gasoline and other fuels, reacted to President Barack Obama's inaugural address, which singled out alternative energy sources as crucial to America's future success.
"Investing in renewable energy is a key to getting our economy back on track," said Derek McLeish, Chairman and CEO of Carbon Sciences. "With President Obama pledging strong backing for sustainable energy and energy efficiency, renewable energy companies like Carbon Sciences are reassured that there will be a seismic shift in U.S. policy. Strong federal support for development of viable renewable energy technologies will be very helpful."
President Obama told the nation, "The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act... We will restore science to its rightful place... We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories... "
"We share the President's concern when he said that the way we use energy today 'threatens our planet,'" commented Byron Elton, President and COO. "The commitment of Obama's 'green team' to meet these challenges, coupled with solutions such as our proprietary technology for transforming CO2 into a renewable fuel, will help America reach the goal of sustainable energy. Building a successful business has a lot to do with timing. Given the current economic, political, and climate challenges, the timing for Carbon Sciences couldn't be better. With the wind to our back, we are moving ahead on the right side of history."

EDF Energies Nouvelles is Commissioning a New 100.5 MW Wind Farm in the United States
As part of its expansion drive in the United States, EDF Energies Nouvelles (Paris:EEN), a major player in the North American renewable energies industry, is announcing the commissioning of its Wapsipinicon wind farm in Minnesota. This facility has 67 turbines each with 1.5 MW in capacity, representing a total of 100.5 MW.
This new wind farm, in which a minority shareholding will be owned by financial investors, was developed and built by enXco, the US subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles. The electricity it generates has been sold under a 25-year contract to Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency, which serves the interests of all the municipally-owned utilities in southern Minnesota. The 67 turbines were supplied by US manufacturer GE Energy.
This facility is part of a complex with over 200 MW in capacity, the southern part of which (Grand Meadows) was built by enXco for third parties and then sold.
With the addition of the Wapsipinicon wind farm, the Group, which has been present in the United States since 2002, is strengthening its positions in the generation of green electricity in North America.
“The commissioning of the Wapsipinicon wind farm has increased our gross capacity in service to over 713 MW in the United States. It represents a market with tremendous potential in which we have been making gains year after year since the beginning of the decade” said David Corchia, Chief Executive Officer of EDF Energies Nouvelles.

Akeena Solar Powers Largest Commercial Solar Installation in San Francisco
Akeena Solar Powers Largest Commercial Solar Installation in San Francisco
Solar Power Partners Supplies Power Purchase Agreement Securing Clean Renewable Energy for Next 15 Years
LOS GATOS, Calif., Jan. 13, 2009 -- Demonstrating continued robust growth in the commercial sector, Akeena Solar (NasdaqCM:AKNS ), one of the nation's leading designers and installers of solar systems, together in partnership with Solar Power Partners, Inc. (SPP) today announced the completion of the largest commercial solar installation in San Francisco. Solar Power Partners financed, developed and will operate the system through a power purchase agreement (PPA), which allows the site owner to purchase power at a predictable rate from SPP. The project totals 385 kilowatts and spreads 1,500 solar panels across four commercial buildings in the Hunters Point/Bayview neighborhood. ``I commend Akeena Solar and Solar Power Partners for their commitment to find economically viable ways to blanket San Francisco with solar panels and solidify San Francisco as a beacon of American solar energy,'' said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who in June signed the nation's largest municipal solar incentive program into law. ``Private sector efforts such as these are equally as important as publicly funded efforts like GoSolarSF to advancing our city's renewable energy initiatives.''
The systems will provide an estimated 60 percent of the commercial buildings' annual power needs -- the equivalent to taking 75 cars off the road each year for 30 years. Located at the intersection of US-101 and Interstate 280, the impressive solar installation is visible to motorists on both freeways.
``I always knew that solar was a solid option for our large flat rooftops, but it was the growing concern for the environment that prompted us to look into rooftop solar,'' said Charlie Muller, the building's property manager with Harrigan, Weidenmuller Co. ``Once we realized solar power could provide a predictable rate of power for decades to come, compared to skyrocketing electricity costs, getting solar power was a win-win. We could lower our electricity bills today and in the future in a way that benefits the environment.''
``Solar Power Partners is proud to team with Akeena Solar to deliver efficient and viable solar energy. We are pleased to provide this smart financial and clean energy service for San Francisco business. Every completed SPP solar project continues to be a long-term win for all parties,'' said Alexander V. Welczeck, CEO of Solar Power Partners.
``Akeena is always pushing the envelope, trying to find innovative new ways to help businesses and homeowners go solar,'' said Barry Cinnamon, CEO of Akeena Solar. ``In San Francisco, there are hundreds of warehouses and commercial buildings like these scattered throughout the city, and the potential for solar energy is huge and relatively untapped. Akeena's Andalay Flat Roof solar system offers these businesses a smart solution to going solar and provide business owners affordable, clean energy that can integrate seamlessly on many buildings' flat rooftops.''
The installation also comes on the heels of the completion of several other large commercial projects throughout the Bay Area -- including a 72 kW installation on a parking garage in Napa and a 34 kW installation at Creative Labels in Gilroy -- which have contributed to Akeena Solar's growth in commercial projects during 2008.
About Akeena Solar, Inc.
Founded in 2001, Akeena Solar's philosophy is simple: We believe producing clean electricity directly from the sun is the right thing to do for our environment and economy. Akeena Solar has grown to become one of the largest national installers of residential and commercial solar power systems in the United States. The company's new integrated solar panel system, Andalay, is the only solar panel system with integrated racking, wiring and grounding. Andalay panels offer unprecedented reliability, performance and beautiful design. For more information, visit Akeena Solar's website: http://www.akeena.com.

Obama’s Green Energy Plan Endorsed by Investors Including T.Boone Pickens (Pickensplan.com)
POINT ROBERTS, WA —January 12, 2009 -- www.RenewableEnergyStocks.com,
a leading investor news and research portal for the renewable energy sector within Investorideas.com, presents a sector close-up on renewable energy stocks trading Friday January 9th. The sector is showing continued strength and optimism in spite of lower oil prices, and scepticism from short-term thinking industry critics.
In President-elect Obama's speech Thursday morning, he stated, "To finally spark the creation of a clean energy economy, we will double the production of alternative energy in the next three years. We will modernize more than 75% of federal buildings and improve the energy efficiency of two million American homes, saving consumers and taxpayers billions on our energy bills. In the process, we will put Americans to work in new jobs that pay well and can’t be outsourced – jobs building solar panels and wind turbines; constructing fuel-efficient cars and buildings; and developing the new energy technologies that will lead to even more jobs, more savings, and a cleaner, safer planet in the bargain."
T.Boone Pickens (Pickensplan.com) followed with a press release stating, “President-Elect Obama’s comments in his speech this morning represent an important first step in solving our nation’s energy crisis and getting our economy moving again. Investing in alternative energy, focusing on conservation and rebuilding our power grid to deliver that energy to every corner of our country are critical components of this effort. As the new Congress and new Administration begin work, it will be critical that they focus on the need to dramatically reduce our dependency on foreign oil, which strangles our economy and threatens our national security. President-Elect Obama made it clear that he also understands the important role that transportation will play in solving our energy crisis and I am confident that he will recognize that as we reduce our imports of foreign oil, there the only domestic resources available are natural gas and plug-in batteries that can have an immediate impact on this effort.
A program focused on renewable energy, conservation, improving the grid and replacing
foreign oil with domestic resources in our transportation system is something that I believe will
create hundreds of thousands of jobs and revitalizes our economy.”

Thin Film Technologies Changing the Solar PV Business
Thin Film Technologies Changing the Solar PV Business

POINT ROBERTS, WA, January 6, 2009- Green Investor at Investorideas.com
http://www.investorideas.com/gi/ reports on Thin Film Technologies Changing the Solar PV Business.
By Paulo Nery
The solar photovoltaic (PV) industry is clearly in a rapid growth phase. The worldwide industry size was recently estimated at $50 billion. Over the past few years, production capacity is thought to have grown at an average of 48% each year and cumulative global production is now at 12.4 Giga Watts (GW). It is also an industry on the brink of change. New technologies are emerging that seem certain have an impact on the entire shape of the PV industry.
Since they were first developed in the 50’s there have been no major changes to the basic crystalline silicon solar cell. But significant improvements are now taking place with several competing innovations vying for position. Crystalline silicon cells, which come in mono and poly crystalline forms, are now being referred to as “first generation” PV. These mature technologies have experienced dramatic growth in volumes. But with shortages of silicon and high prices affecting finished costs, the volumes are dropping. If silicon prices drop further we could yet see more competitive prices for these solar PV modules. But there’s only so much that prices can drop with that technology.
Second generation PV, or thin film technology, holds out the real promise of more price competitive systems because they can be manufactured with dramatically less material, shorter supply chains and cheaper, faster processes. Thin film is still a nascent industry and competition between players is much more about intellectual property and access to capital than the manufacturing efficiencies that drive the first generation PV makers. So there are lower prices from improved efficiency to be anticipated still.
There are three main approaches to thin film technologies based on different materials that can be used for the semi-conductor of a PV cell. The first to be established was amorphous silicon pioneered by United Solar Ovonics (NasdaqGS: ENER) which sells under the brand Uni-Solar. This technique, now used by a few dozen manufacturers around the world, relies on a small amount of amorphous silicon alloy and accounts for about 60% of the thin film PV made today. These systems have been sold for several years as building-integrated PV offering the advantage of nearly undetectable systems on rooftops for both commercial and residential buildings. United Solar sales amounted to 73 megawatts in 2008 and their sales pipeline has $1.8 billion. Their production capacity is currently at 118 Mega Watts (MW) with planned growth to 1 GW by 2012.
XsunX, (XSNX.OB) is also manufacturing thin-film modules using amorphous silicon and has taken aim at utility scale and grid-tied commercial installations. XsunX has developed proprietary techniques that have enabled it to achieve outstanding efficiency levels for amorphous silicon. The company plans to have production capacity of 25 MW in 2009 and is aiming for 100 MW in a few years. It has also recently contracted to supply 15 MW of its solar modules, worth over $37 million, over 2 years. XsunX and United Solar Ovonics are the only listed companies that are real investment plays on silicon based thin-film technology. Yes, Canon, Sharp and even Mitsubishi are in the game, but those companies are diversified into so many other products that investing in them wouldn’t be a play on solar. Other companies manufacturing amorphous silicon thin film include Auria Solar in Taiwan, EPV in New Jersey, Free Energy Europe in France, Heliodomi in Greece, Polar PV in China, Shenzhen Topray in China, Sinonar in Taiwan, TerraSolar in New York and VHF-Technologies in Switzerland.
The next approach to thin film uses cadmium telluride (CdTe) as the semi-conductor material. While CdTe modules are cheaper and faster to produce, so far they are much less efficient at around 10%. For utility scale installations, that seems not to be a critical factor however. The leader in this field is First Solar (FSLR) with over 1 gigawatt of production capacity, over 600 megawatts shipped so far, and over 3.8 gigawatts of contracted sales, worth $6.3 billion through 2013. According to their annual report, First Solar’s gross margins are 56%, which is twice that of most of their competitors’ costs. And they claim their cost per Watt to be $1.29, half to a third of their competitors. First Solar’s objective, though, is to be at $0.65-0.70 per Watt by 2012. After a tremendous run through 2007 up to May of 2008, when the stock went from about 28 to over 300, it tumbled to 85 for a brief while in November of 2008 only to rebound recently to around 130. One of the other CdTe developments was an Ohio company, Solar Fields, which was bought last year by Q-Cells, a German company. Ava Solar, in Colorado, has recently secured $104 million in funding and plans to large scale manufacturing in 2009.
Another group of companies is manufacturing cells with Copper Indium Gallium Di-Selenide (CIGS) as the semi-conductor. These include ICP Solar in Quebec, Solyndra in California, Global Solar in Arizona, MiaSole in California, Heliovolt in Texas, TerraSolar in New York and Nanosolar in California. All of these companies remain private. One of the biggest efforts currently is coming from Honda, who is a major player in crystalline silicon cells. CIGS systems have demonstrated efficiencies that approach 20%, which is significantly higher that CdTe modules and close to the efficiency of crystalline silicon modules. However, to date at least, the manufacturing processes are less tolerant to change.
All of the thin-film technologies have the advantage of requiring much less semiconductor material. It can be less than 1 percent of silicone used in crystalline cells. And they can be manufactured using high-speed techniques such as roll-to-roll printing. Their disadvantage is their lower efficiency. Even so, many new manufacturers in each three types are coming online every month.
Third-generation PV technologies includes approaches such as dye-sensitized solar cells, quantum dots, nano-antennaes, nanomodified materials and organic cells. These all offer the promise of higher efficiencies and lower costs than even second generation technology. But none is yet clearly established as a leader, and none of these technologies is yet available as an exchange traded investment.
Both second and third generation solar technology companies are highly concentrated in the US. So some observers have concluded that there will be a shift back to the US of the solar cell manufacturing that went to Asia. However, as the companies in this sector scale up their operations they’ll be tempted to manufacture where prices are lower to keep their costs down. But it’s by no means clear since as fast as companies shift manufacturing to Asia, overseas companies are building facilities in the US. For instance, SolarWorld (SRWRF.PK) from Germany has opened what they say is the US’s largest solar cell factory in Hillsboro, OR. Meantime, Sanyo Electric (SANYY.PK) from Japan is building a factory in Salem, OR.
Thomas Friedman, author of “Hot, Flat and Crowded”, has said that energy technology is the industrial sector where global leadership will be established in the next several years. With the rush of new innovation taking place in advanced solar technologies in the US, there’s still a chance that the US can claim that leadership position. But the game is still wide open.

Renewable and Solar Energy Perspectives with J. Peter Lynch

Exclusively for InvestorIdeas.com and Renewableenergystocks.com
I am sure that EVERYONE is happy that 2008 has come to an end. Not many folks I know would list 2008 as one of their favorite years. In fact, 2008 was the worst year for the stock market since 1931 and as the table below clearly shows, solar stocks with their very high beta’s* did about twice a poorly as the general market.
*Beta – is a financial measure of correlation to the general market. A stocks Beta that is equal to 1 means that a stock moves exactly with the market. A higher (than 1) Beta means the stock moves GREATER in BOTH directions than the market. This also implies greater volatility.
Solar Stocks Brief History
If you look at Solar Stocks and the year they had in 2008 and put it into perspective, you will see that it is another stage in the development of a new industry. New industries DO NOT just spring into prominence instantly, their road to maturation is almost always a very bumpy, volatile and hazard filled path. The solar industry will be no different.
If we look at the very short history of solar stocks through past headlines of stories I have written it would look like this:
2005 was “The Year of Solar Stocks”, solar stocks outperformed the general averages by 20 FOLD, gaining an average of 134% versus the major indexes average gain of 6%.
2006 was “The Year of the Solar IPO”, a year in which the largest number of solar related companies, to date, came public though IPO’s.
2007 was “The Year of Thin Film Solar” this was the year when the industry and the general public really seemed to focus in on thin film technologies and their longer term potential.
2008 was “The Year of the Solar Stock Collapse”, in which the general stock market had its worst year since 1931 and solar stocks were down 76% on average.
What is my Outlook for 2009? I will cover that in the next article, but first I would like to repeat some information that I think is worthwhile for investors. In columns in September and October of 2008 (see below) I spoke about WHEN a market will historically turn around and HOW aggressive investors can use a simple technique to try and increase the timing accuracy of their trading:
When the Market will Turnaround
“However, now that we are in this horrible market the best thing to do is to prepare for the time when it turns around to the upside. Keep in mind, that this turn will ALWAYS take place at the darkest hour and when the word "recession" is everywhere.”
“Remember, in the short term the dominating factors are primarily psychological. In the long term it is always reality”.
How to use a Simple, but effective Trading Technique
“How can an investor prepare when it comes? Well that is certainly something that can very difficult to predict and mostly likely would require some measure of luck. But one of the simplest short term methods I have used over the years to determine trading points for stocks (and the market in general) is the 50-day moving average. To summarize:
If a stock is trading OVER its 50-day moving average it is in an uptrend.
If a stock is trading UNDER its 50-day moving average it is in a downtrend”.
The Market Situation Today
If look at the general press today, you will see the word “recession” and maybe even the word “Depression” everywhere - T.V., magazine covers and newspapers. Psychology is dominating the market and the primary element of this is FEAR. If you remember from prior articles there are TWO KEY ELEMENTS in the stock market – FEAR (at bottoms) and GREED (at tops).
Keep in mind that media is looking thru the REAR VIEW WINDOW and the stock market is looking out the front to the future. The market is looking out 6 months or more and that is what will be reflected in stock prices NOT what is happening now.
Isn’t it strange that you very seldom ever hear that the market is UP over 20% in the last month or so?
Take a look at the table below. Eight of our stocks are above their 50 day moving average versus only ONE stock being above its 50 day moving average in September, October and November of 2008. This certainly tells you that the group as a whole is looking more “technically” healthy and starting to (hopefully) form some meaningful bases for future advances.
Solar Stocks Snapshot 2008 Year End
Please keep in mind that there that there is no way to know the perfect time to buy stocks and that there is no perfect system for predicting stock movements. However, all that can be said is that stocks ABOVE their 50 day moving average tend to have a better chance of moving higher and probably indicates that these stocks are among the stronger stocks in the sector.
Also remember that the solar sector has a very high Beta and is extremely volatile and one must be a nimble trader and constantly stay alert in order to make money in this emerging market segment.
