First Solar and SolarCity Announce 100MW Module Supply Agreement to Serve U.S. Residential Segment

Companies sign 5-year 100MW module supply agreement
First Solar invests $25 million in SolarCity

TEMPE, Ariz. & FOSTER CITY, Calif.--Oct 29--First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq:FSLR) and SolarCity Corporation today announced a module supply agreement and investment that will make solar power an affordable option for more U.S. homeowners and businesses. The two companies have entered into a five-year agreement that calls for First Solar to supply 100 megawatts of its advanced thin film solar modules to SolarCity, marking First Solar’s entrance into the U.S. residential segment. Pursuant to the agreement, First Solar will begin delivering modules to SolarCity in the first quarter of 2009. First Solar will also make a $25 million equity investment in SolarCity; part of a $30 million round of financing that will fund SolarCity’s continued U.S. expansion.

SolarCity, one of the nation’s leading residential solar installers, currently serves California, Arizona, and Oregon with plans to expand into additional states. SolarCity’s innovative SolarLease™ financing option allows homeowners to switch to solar power for less money than they currently pay for electricity from their power company, without the need for a large upfront investment.

With years of high volume production and system performance monitoring, First Solar has demonstrated proven efficiencies leading to high energy yields, low production costs and predictable energy performance. First Solar’s industry-leading modules make it possible for SolarCity to serve residential and small commercial markets where solar was not previously an affordable option.

“The combination of First Solar’s modules with SolarCity’s innovative approach to designing, financing and maintaining complete solar solutions enables homeowners and small business owners to lower their electricity costs while reducing air pollution and the effects of global warming,” said Mike Ahearn, First Solar’s chief executive officer.

“Our relationship with First Solar will enable us to deliver affordable solar power to a wider market of residential and small commercial customers,” said Lyndon Rive, chief executive officer of SolarCity. “We believe that together, SolarCity and First Solar are uniquely capable of making solar power competitive with the cost of electricity generated from fossil fuels across the U.S.,—making solar a mainstream source of electricity in the next several years.”

Solar Stocks Investor Podcast; Tom Djokovich, CEO of XsunX Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX) Discusses Amorphous Thin Film, the “Thinnest of the Thin Films”

Solar Stocks Investor Podcast; Tom Djokovich, CEO of XsunX Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX) Discusses Amorphous Thin Film, the “Thinnest of the Thin Films”

Mr. Djokovich comments on the long term vision for renewable energy – “Once the financial markets calm down there will be a reinvigorated movement of money into the space”

POINT ROBERTS, WA - October 28, 2008 -- Investorideas.com and its leading green investor portal, RenewableEnergyStocks.com, presents a solar stocks podcast with Tom Djokovich, CEO of XsunX, Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX). XsunX is executing a phased plan to build and install its amorphous silicon thin film solar module manufacturing facility.

Tom Djokovich, CEO of XsunX, discusses his return from the Solar Power International 2008 Conference and Trade Show in San Diego and the feedback and industry insight into the solar sector, and in particular thin film.

Mr. Djokovich reports on the thin film pricing advantage in the market place and if this is a tangible reality or hearsay. “Yes, thin films really do have a pricing advantage in the marketplace. The bottom line is you are starting with lower material costs and more automation, and of the thin films, amorphous is the thinnest. The lower manufacturing cost per watt translates into the ability to sell at a lower cost into the marketplace.”

Mr. Djokovich also discusses XsunX’s costs per watt once the manufacturing facility is up and running. “We see ourselves initially coming in at approximately the $1.30 range at only 58% factory utilization, and we think we can drive our numbers down to $1.00 per watt once we improve factory utilization to 80% or better. After that we will work on reducing the back end packaging costs further. At or near $1.00 per watt will make us extremely competitive in the marketplace.”

Mr. Djokovich also comments on the long term vision for renewable energy,” Once the financial markets calm down there will be a reinvigorated movement of money into the space. The industry is not just poised for growth- it is continuing to grow and right now it is being overshadowed by market conditions. The bottom line in the back room is the industry is growing very well.”

Solar Stocks Plunge with Market but Ray of Hope Ahead

Solar Stocks Plunge with Market but Ray of Hope Ahead
By Peter LynchExclusively for InvestorIdeas.com

October 27, 2008
Since 2005 Solar stocks have been the “hottest” sector in the stock market, however, with an average Beta close to 2, the volatility of the solar sector has been simply breathtaking.Unfortunately Beta and volatility works in BOTH directions and as you can see from the table below solar stocks have been down an average of 61% SINCE September 1 2008.

The popular indexes have been down approximately 31%. In essence, it has been a TERRIBLE time for the market as a whole and a WORSE time for the solar sector.

There may be more crazy days and perhaps weeks ahead. But if you look at historical precedence, stocks should be higher 3 to 6 months from now. Especially now, that we are seeing the forbidden word “recession” starting to pop up everywhere. This is usually the classic sign that the market has bottomed and once everyone finally recognizes that the recession is here (I personally think we have been in a recession for 10 to 12 months already), the market will be up 20 to 30% off the bottom.

This is certainly NOT a sure bet, but when panic and fear are this palpable EVERYWHERE it has historically meant that investors have given up and capitulated. If we look at the short history of solar stocks, they too, should be lifted by the market tide and should also move higher further and faster than the general market. They are ALL well oversold and still have a BETA which is roughly TWICE that of the general market. In addition, if Senator Obama wins the Presidency it will be hugely BULLISH for all renewable sectors of the market (PV, wind, biomass, hybrid cars, solar thermal etc .) this victory, plus a turn in the market could add an explosive charge to solar stocks. As I have said many times in the past, I still see a number of serious problems that the industry will face in 2009 and beyond. But I do feel there will be at least one more rally that will enable traders to take significant profits. But once again, I have to warn investors that this is NOT for the faint of heart and only for nimble traders. In addition, because of the current situation in the financial world you want to MAKE SURE to only trade the solar stocks with substantial CASH positions.

I believe that the risks of inaction are so great that governments will have to finally act in concert to create much needed confidence and thereby reverse this crisis of confidence that is the seed of the current panic.Remember the words of the legendary investor Warren Buffet, who has recently said that he is returning to the market with his personal investment dollars:
"We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful."

He was the contributing editor for 17 years to the Photovoltaic Insider Report, the leading publication in PV that was directed at industrial subscribers, such as major energy companies, utilities and governments around the world. Solar Stocks Investor Podcast with Tom Djokovich, CEO of Thin Film Solar Company, XsunX Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX)

Solar Stocks Investor Podcast with Tom Djokovich, CEO of Thin Film Solar Company, XsunX Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX)

“We envision thin film literally usurping the market share that silicon wafer technologies currently enjoy”

POINT ROBERTS, WA -October 15, 2008 -- Investorideas.com and its leading green investor portal, RenewableEnergyStocks.com, presents a solar podcast with Tom Djokovich, CEO of XsunX, Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX). XsunX, Inc is a solar technology Company engaged in the build-out of its multi-megawatt thin film photovoltaic solar manufacturing facilities.

Tom Djokovich, CEO of XsunX, discusses recent successes and milestones for his thin film company as well as recent industry developments including the recent passage of the solar ITC legislation.

In the interview, Tom provides background on the events and steps leading to the recent news that the Oregon Economic Development Association (OEDA) recognized XsunX as a Business Development Success Story in an award presented to the City of Wood Village, Oregon.

Tom also gives investors insight into thin film solar technology and its benefits, features and the feedback from the purchasing community. He also comments on a recent report where Sharp states they expect thin-film solar cells to account for about 40 percent of an estimated global solar demand of 16 gigawatts by 2012.

“In real world conditions - thin film tends to out-perform silicon wafer technologies in most environments. Thin films are less expensive to manufacture so you can sell them for less per watt- that’s benefit number one. Benefit number two is the consumer that acquires that watt gets more annual production for each watt they purchase”, he reports.

“At the trade shows we have been attending recently in Europe, the feedback from the Power Purchase Associations and large commercial application consumers is - they are prepared to pay a premium for thin films. They now realize the value of them but the issue is that there is very little thin film available in the market. As more of it becomes available in market space, what we envision is thin film literally usurping the market share that silicon wafer technologies currently enjoy. “

XsunX Inc is attending the upcoming San Diego Solar Power Show and will follow up with Investorideas.com in an audio interview upon return.

“Water stocks are not recession proof but are recession resistant”

Investorideas.com Water Stocks Podcast; Bill Brennan Discusses the Performance of the Kinetics Water Infrastructure Fund, Global Water Industry Trends and Investing Trends

“Water stocks are not recession proof but are recession resistant”

POINT ROBERTS, WA and DELTA, BC –October 7, 2008- Investorideas.com and its Water-stocks.com Podcast series “Investing in Water” present an in-depth interview with Mr. Bill Brennan, President & Managing Partner of Aqua Terra Asset Management and Senior Portfolio Manager of the Praetor Global Water Fund. Mr. Brennan discusses the performance of the Kinetics Water Infrastructure Fund and global trends specific to the sector including water re-use and reclamation.

According to Mr. Brennan the Kinetics Water Infrastructure Fund, launched in June 2007, focuses on water infrastructure both globally and in the US. The fund is about 65% invested in companies that are domiciled outside of the US.

Mr. Brennan reports, ”“What we try to do is invest in the areas where infrastructure spending is accelerating. We have seen it go from about $250 -260 Billion 5 years ago to $520 Billion moving to a Trillion dollars in the next 4-5 years on an annual basis. We invest in companies that have a 30-40% exposure to water infrastructure and growing.

So you won’t see us involved in areas that are not water company related. We won’t be in the GE’s and the Siemens of the world, because even though they are big players in water and water infrastructure, their revenue does not move the needle enough from a contribution standpoint to make it into our universe. We have to watch those companies because they are actively involved in acquisitions and they have become the leaders in technology. We focus on the small and mid-cap companies that are really going to benefit from the increase in spending globally.”

In discussing the fund performance Mr. Brennan tells us, “The fund continues to out-perform the broader market by about 800-900 basis points in regard to the S&P and we also outperform the water ETF’s on an absolute performance basis.”
“Water stocks are not recession proof but are recession resistant”, he notes. “People have to take a look at necessities- where they spend. Water is a necessity along with power and waste management.”

All Charged Up - Battery power plays worth exploring

All Charged Up - Battery power plays worth exploring

September 4, 2008 , Delta BC- Green Investor at Investorideas.com
http://www.investorideas.com/gi/
By Paulo Nery

Batteries are becoming increasingly important to our lives. Not only to sustain our rapidly expanding wireless technology requirements, but also to support our need to travel about. With hybrids, plug in hybrids and fully electric vehicles beginning to provide us with more cost effective transport, we’re bound to depend more and more on batteries. And at a larger scale, as we integrate more renewable sources of energy into our electricity grid, we’ll need to manage supplies with more uncertainty. So, there is likely to be an increased need for energy storage solutions to help temper the ups and downs of power supply irregularity.

Lithium Ion batteries seem to get a lot press for their higher storage capacity per pound, but the more traditional lead-acid batteries are likely to be with us for a long time to come, particularly in the many industrial applications the use them.

The biggest maker of industrial lead acid batteries is Enersys (ENS). They make batteries for forklifts and for back up power systems, over 60% of which is overseas. They’re selling into markets like global logistics, telecoms companies and the military.

Enersys has a proprietary technology that means their batteries last longer and are smaller than the average lead-acid battery. They call it "thin pure plate lead" or TPPL. According to their last conference call, demand for these batteries is more than they can keep up with. So they’re expanding the plant that makes them.

But Enersys is not just about old battery technology. They also have a lithium-ion battery technology which they sell primarily to military, telecoms and specialty industries. So this steady tech company is well positioned for near term as well as longer term growth. (www.enersys.com)

Another large maker of lead acid batteries is Exide (XIDE) who make batteries for cars, bikes, boats, agricultural equipment, construction vehicles etc. They also sell specialized batteries for forklifts and other industrial equipment including the military. Like EDS, over half of their sales come from overseas.

Only yesterday I had to put a new battery in my wife’s car. And where do you think the old one went? Yep, Exide, who happen to be the largest recycler of lead batteries in the U.S. That means they’re getting better value than buying lead on the open market, and saving a bundle in the process of being green.

Their market cap, at $837 million, is about 25% less than Enersys. But their sales are considerably higher and their p/e ratio is slightly lower, so I’m inclined to like them a bit more. (www.exide.com)

Axion Power International (AXPW) is developing a proprietary technology they call PbC – perhaps because it’s a hybrid of lead-acid and carbon. See their website for more details on how it’s made (www.axionpower.com). Axion aims to sell the batteries made with PbC as an upgrade to conventional lead-acid batteries in industrial applications. This is an enormous broad-based potential market that will likely respond to more efficient batteries.
They’ve been focused for over two years on refining their manufacturing methods as well as continuing with performance testing on the pre-production prototypes. These tests have shown that their PbC batteries have considerably longer cycle-lives, faster recharge rates and more power than conventional lead acid batteries. But then, a lot can change between pre-production and real world production.
If you’re in the mood for more speculative plays, Ener1 (HEV) is a good start. They don’t have significant sales yet, but are developing Lithium-Ion batteries that have been delivered as prototypes and successfully tested in a Th!nk EV (electric vehicle). They’ve already built a manufacturing and testing facility and expect to begin manufacturing by the end of this year. So they might actually be the first to offer a production Litium-Ion battery to the auto industry.

For the long term, Ener1 is developing nano-materials for better battery storage. That’s very intriguing with oil prices high, but not something to hold your breath for.

And, you have to like the fact that they’ve shifted from the OTC market to the AMEX, which makes the company seem that much more credible. (www.ener1.com)

If you’re a fan of Lithium-Ion batteries you could do worse than to look at Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) the Chilean mining company that produces potassium nitrate, iodine and lithium carbonate other specialty products. They just happen to also be the world’s biggest producer of Lithium, a business that was 15% of their revenues last year but is expanding fast and expected to approach 40% by the end of this year. Clearly, they will be a big benefactor of any significant increase in demand for Lithium from whichever battery maker, or makers, succeed in launching real-world products. (www.sqm.com)

Some other battery technology companies to keep an eye out for include:
Maxwell Technologies, Inc. (MXWL) - supercapacitors (www.maxwell.com)
Energy Conversion Devices (ENER) - nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery technology (www.ovonic.com)
Advanced Battery Technologies, Inc (ABAT) - polymer Lithium-Ion (www.advancedbatterytech.com)

While the Lithium-Ion batteries seem to get most of the star attention, the advantages, mainly smaller size, relative to the cost only pay off for mobile devices right now. So the old-fashioned lead-acid battery is likely to continue to hold on to a big piece of the market for a long time yet. But the lead-carbon hybrid concept offers bankable advantages like faster charge, longer life and higher power. So it may find a significant market once production begins in earnest.

Renewable Energy Stocks Green Investor Audio Interview with Ezra Green, CEO & Chairman of Clear Skies Solar, Inc. (OTCBB: CSKH)

Patented XTRAXR Technology Estimated at $500 million - $1 billion Globally

POINT ROBERTS, WA and DELTA, BC—August 26, 2008 -- www.RenewableEnergyStocks.com,
a leading investor news and research portal for the renewable energy sector within Investorideas.com, presents a green investor audio interview featuring Ezra Green, CEO and Chairman of Clear Skies Solar, Inc. (OTCBB: CSKH).

In discussing the announced completion of a major project in the second Q, Ezra Green details the scope, timelines of the project, and the profit margins for the company.

Mr. Green reports, “This particular project took us six weeks to complete. As far as profit margins, every project is different but we like to work in the arena of 15-25% margins.”

Answering how the company manages foreign projects, such as the 150kW solar contract through its partnership in Greece with Larissa-based, Aspen Energy, Mr. Green explains,” We have a very strong operations team and we have strong ties to the local communities with our partners. We are able to operate and execute as if we were nationals.”

In terms of the company’s business model, to compliment and add to the primary business of solar installations, Clear Skies Solar has taken advantage of intelligence in the field and developed some in- house proprietary technologies. Mr. Green describes the company’s current portfolio and market niches.

In commenting on the potential of the first patent, XTRAXR, the first of its kind to handle the trading of carbon credits and comprehensive billing procedures, he states, “We are estimating the market for us to be about $500 million to $1 billion globally. This product was developed specifically to capture the actual real time readings of the small systems, which up until now have been too expensive to monitor by conventional means. With our product, we are talking about pennies per day.”

In closing, Mr. Green comments, “Many countries are adopting solar programs like Greece, India and Italy, which we are all involved with. We don’t focus only on the United States, although it is a huge market for us, we view it as an addition to global markets.”

Renewable Energy Stocks Green Investor Audio Interview with

Renewable Energy Stocks Green Investor Audio Interview with
Tom Djokovich, CEO of Thin Film Solar Company, XsunX, Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX)

“We’ve designed our solar modules specifically for the electrical utilities scale market”

POINT ROBERTS, WA and DELTA, BC—August 19, 2008 -- www.RenewableEnergyStocks.com,
a leading investor news and research portal for the renewable energy sector within Investorideas.com, presents a green investor audio interview with Tom Djokovich, CEO of XsunX, Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX). XsunX, Inc is a solar technology Company engaged in the build-out of its multi-megawatt thin film photovoltaic solar manufacturing facilities.

In the interview, Tom Djokovich, CEO of XsunX discusses the company’s business model, the thin film solar technology, recent progress, market drivers and current bids and proposals in the pipeline.

“A year ago we designed a solar module and a manufacturing system to produce it. In January we began building a manufacturing facility near Portland Oregon. To start, we will build about 25 megawatts of production capacity, which represents approximately 200,000 marketable solar panels per year, and then grow that capacity to 35 megawatts by improving our system performance and adding work shifts. We then plan to begin efforts to scale to 100 megawatts of manufacturing capacity by some time in 2010”, Tom Djokovich summarizes in describing his business model.

According to Mr. Djokovich, “Our modules are designed for the electrical utilities scale market where thousands of solar modules are used in each power field. We have started bidding projects for utilities and government agencies to install our modules. The second part of our target market is the conventional installer and integrator where we have received significant requests for purchases of our modules in 2009 and later.”

In addressing the opportunity, Mr. Djokovich notes “The electrical market is enormous. To keep up with demand, the utilities are reaching out for new power production methods that are clean and safe. Long term, these power fields are great investments that can provide a 5 year payback on the average installation and then you have 15 years of cash flow with low operating costs. We see this trend picking up significantly and have positioned ourselves to take advantage of this opportunity.”

“A strong demand and interest for renewable packaging solutions”

POINT ROBERTS, WA and DELTA, BC August 18, 2008 www.Renewableenergystocks.com,
a leading investor news and research portal for the renewable energy sector within Investorideas.com, presents a green investor podcast with Andy Badolato, CEO of Industrial Biotechnology Corporation (OTCPK: IBOT).

Industrial Biotechnology Corporation (OTCPK: IBOT), utilizes sugarcane ethanol for energy solutions and environmentally friendly chemicals for consumer packaging, energy, agricultural, pesticides, materials and polymer industries.

Mr. Badolato discusses the Company's two operating subsidiaries, Renewable Chemicals Corporation that utilizes sugarcane feedstock as an alternative to petroleum based chemicals and
Renewable Fuels of America Inc., an importer and distributor of Brazilian sugarcane ethanol to targeted coastal areas.

According to Mr. Badolato, “The company’s current business models root were developing commercial biological technologies and solutions for the chemical industry. In the marketplace we became aware of the growing trends towards sustainable eco-efficient solutions using renewable resources. We saw a real need and opportunity for the next wave, after the use of ethanol as an alternative fuels, for bio-renewable chemicals. There is a strong demand and interest for renewable packaging solutions. Wal-Mart (Market, News) for example, has initiated and pioneered a very strong sustainability initiative that focuses on reducing packaging and adherence to sustainable practices.”

In elaborating on his current partners, “We went about developing partners and providers in the supply chain to deliver bio-renewable chemicals. We met Cosan SA (Market, News) approximately a year ago. Cosan is the world’s largest processor of sugarcane ethanol, which happens to be 7-8 times more efficient than corn feedstock, has significantly less carbon impact, and is not a competing food source”

Updating Renewable Fuels of America Inc., Mr. Badolato notes, “We anticipate revenues shortly and are in process of negotiating final agreements. We have identified distributors, storage facilities, and of course have supply in place with Cosan. “

SEATTLE, Aug. 12 - Mantra Venture Group Ltd. (OTCBB: MVTG - FSE: 5MV) is pleased to provide an update on the progress of its ERC (Electro Reduction of Carbon Dioxide) technology at its laboratory. The following tasks have been completed to date:

- The preliminary process flow diagram has been reviewed and updated;
- Material compatible for the project have been reviewed;
- Major components have been selected and ordered;
- Electrochemical cells have been received from the University of
British Columbia and are currently being refurbished for the project;
and
- A one year research and development schedule has been completed.

In addition, assembly of the test rig is underway under the oversight of Mr. Norman Chow, the President of Kemetco Research Inc. Mr. Chow is highly experienced in serving his various clients in designing test and research protocols to achieve specific ends within budget and on schedule. In this project he is working closely with Professor Colin Oloman, one of the inventors and an individual who is very knowledgeable about the ERC chemistry and underlying processes. They have worked together previously and understand one another which allows them to easily communicate and to concentrate on the complexities required in the project.

Kemetco's Senior Research Scientist on the project, Mr. Joey Jung, has a solid background in electrochemical engineering, battery research, fuel cell and electrowinning technologies. He has direct understanding of what must be accomplished from his own inventions, and from making numerous patent applications. Mr. Jung has overseen most of the purchasing for the test rig and is assembling manufacturing diagrams.

The ERC process takes carbon dioxide and water, combined with electricity, to produce fuels and chemicals such as formic acid, formates and oxygen. The scientific research conducted on the ERC process was summarized in three papers. Two papers were published in Journal of Applied Electrochemistry(1),(2) and one published in Chem Sus Chem(3).

Larry Kristof, Mantra's C.E.O., commented "The ERC test station is scheduled to be assembled by September 19, 2008 and online by September 30, 2008. Mantra is very excited to push this technology through to the marketplace. Implementation of this technology will have a significant impact on our current climate change crisis."

Mantra Venture Group Announces Entry into an Agreement in Principle for a Cellulosic Ethanol Joint Venture

Mantra Venture Group Announces Entry into an Agreement in Principle for a Cellulosic Ethanol Joint Venture

SEATTLE, WA, Aug. 4 - Mantra Venture Group Ltd. (OTCBB: MVTG - FSE: 5MV) is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement in principle for a joint venture agreement with Northwind Ethanol Ltd. ("Northwind") to produce fuel ethanol using their proprietary starch and cellulose technology. The final agreement is undergoing final review by Mantra and Northwind's legal counsel. The joint venture will be carried out through Mantra's wholly-owned subsidiary, Mantra NextGen Power Inc. ("NextGen"). According to the terms of the joint venture agreement, Mantra will own 51% of NextGen and Northwind will own 49%.

NextGen has also acquired the exclusive North American license from Northwind to produce cellulosic ethanol, ethanol derived from wood and agricultural wastes, using an exclusive proprietary technology. This technology promises to be much more economic, practical and clean, than ethanol from conventional corn processing. NextGen also has the right to purchase additional worldwide licenses at an additional cost. This high efficiency, low energy demand process will reduce ethanol production costs by more than 1/3.

NextGen's management team and Board of Directors has also been implemented, with Larry Kristof of Mantra to act as President, Fred Enga of Northwind will act as C.E.O., Dennis Petke of Mantra will act as Secretary and Brian Currie of Northwind to act as Treasurer and C.F.O. These four gentlemen will also serve on NextGen's Board of Directors, with a fifth director to be chosen by mutual consent of Mantra and Northwind. Now that the management of NextGen is in place, they will focus their attention on raising capital in order to finance NextGen's first plant.

Fred Enga, Northwind's President and C.E.O., commented, "Our two companies have finalized the deal that will see cellulosic ethanol come to commercialization. This will allow NextGen to bring this new, exciting, clean technology to the marketplace."

Larry Kristof, Mantra's President and C.E.O. added, "This joint venture is an important step for both NextGen and Mantra. Ethanol produced from a source other than corn, an important food staple, is in high demand. NextGen is poised to meet that high demand and enter this burgeoning market very quickly - we hope to break ground on our first 20 million gallon per year plant by the end of this year."
